2005 New Product Innovation Award

The 2005 New Product Innovation Award has now ended and we would like to congratulate BST Oyster Supplies Pty Ltd as the Overall Winner.

About the Award

The 2005 New Product Innovation Award (NPIA) celebrates South Australian businesses that have excelled in successfully commercialising innovative products. The program is conducted by the Department of Trade and Economic Development (DTED) in partnership with the Engineering Employers Association South Australia, Business SA and the Design Institute of Australia (South Australia Branch).

The Winners

Overall Winner - BST Oyster Supplies Pty Ltd for their BST Adjustable Long-Line Oyster Farming System

The Adjustable Long-Line Oyster Farming System was developed by three oyster growers at Cowell to suit the rough and weedy conditions in Franklin Harbour. The success of the Long-Line system lies in the ability to raise and lower the height of the oyster bags on the line, thereby giving the oyster farmer a management technique to control shell growth, meat condition, cleaning and rumbling.

The system is a vast improvement over the traditional fixed timber racking where the oysters are at the mercy of the elements. The BST system is simpler to erect, with lower maintenance costs and higher yields. Harvesting and processing productivity is also improved.

The system has received broad acceptance in the Australian oyster growing industry and is now penetrating overseas markets including Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Japan, the UK, France and Ireland.

Oyster Growing System

"The result of an effective partnership with the oyster farming industry has yielded a highly efficient system that incorporates a myriad of innovations, elegant in their simplicity, yet vastly superior in functionality compared to prior solutions.
The jury was impressed by the attention to detail and success of the overall cohesiveness of the design solution, which has made a significant contribution to a growing Australian industry, far exceeding manufacturers’ expectation in sales figures.”

State award win Thursday, 26 May 2005

BST Oysters took out the major honours in the 2005 South Australian New Product Innovation Awards last Friday night in Adelaide.

The Cowell-based business was the regional and overall winner in the awards that were presented by Minister for Industry and Trade, Paul Holloway.

The adjustable long-line oyster farming system was designed to suit the rough and weedy conditions in Franklin Harbour and is now being exported around the world.

BST Oysters chief executive officer Ashley Turner said he was lost for words when his company was announced as the winner of the awards.

He said when the company won the regional award, he got up and made his speech but couldn't believe it when the company was named as the overall winner.

"I was speechless... it was just wow!" he said.

Mr Turner said after being nominated for the award by its design company in Adelaide, BST Oysters had to fill out a questionnaire and was visited by judges who looked at the business.

He said the award wasn't given for just one aspect of the business, instead, the judges looked at every aspect including development, export revenue, marketing and innovation.

BST Oysters currently exports its product to New Zealand, the UK and Europe and is investigating other markets.

Other placegetters in the overall category included: KEE Technologies Pty Ltd and Extreme Machining Australia.
